Obama Responds To FG, Boko Haram Ceasefire Deal

 

President Barrack Obama of the United States of America has called on all parties involved to honour and implement the ceasefire agreement which was announced over the weekend by the Federal Government.

The Federal govt. had claimed to have reached a deal with Boko Haram sect to ceasefire and also release over 200 abducted Chibok schoolgirls in its captivity on Friday, October 17, 2014.

President Obama who spoke through his deputy spokesperson of the State Department, Ms. Marie Harf, at a press briefing in Washington, DC, said he was aware of reports about a possible announcement by the Nigerian government of a ceasefire, adding that his administration would welcome an end to hostilities in Nigeria.

Darf said the American government would be filled with joy if the Federal Government and the insurgents maintain the ceasefire agreement.

She said, 

“We confirm reports that a ceasefire has been announced and it appears to have been put into place. We would welcome that ceasefire and call on all parties both to implement and maintain such a ceasefire, and hope that such a ceasefire would herald the return of peace to the northeast. This is a region that has had far too little of that.

“It’s our understanding that negotiations about a deal to release the girls continue. Obviously, would join the world, I think, in hoping that these girls would be reunited with their families as soon as possible, but it’s our understanding those negotiations do continue.”

Darf further explained that if the ceasefire was properly implemented, it would bring an end to the insurgency ravaging the north eastern region, urging all parties to ensure that the ceasefire deal becomes a reality.
